"DriveON" gets used loosely in the trucking world to mean "the inspection thing we have to do," but it's actually a specific, named Ontario government program with clear rules about which vehicles it covers and how testing has to be performed. Understanding the structure helps fleet operators plan around it instead of reacting to it.
DriveON is Ontario's digital-based program for commercial vehicle safety and emissions inspections. It replaced the old paper-based Motor Vehicle Inspection Stations (MVIS) program, which officially ended on March 31, 2025 — as of April 1, 2025, commercial vehicle inspections in Ontario must be completed under the digital DriveON system. Only DriveON-registered facilities and registered DriveON technicians are permitted to issue the relevant certificates.
An annual safety inspection (valid for 12 months) is required for most trucks, trailers, and converter dollies — alone or in combination — when the applicable total gross weight, registered gross weight (RGW), or manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) exceeds 4,500 kg, including the combined-weight rules for truck-and-trailer combinations. Tow trucks need one regardless of weight, as do concrete pumps and mobile cranes (excluding off-road cranes).

Within DriveON, emissions testing for heavy-duty diesel commercial vehicles is governed by Directive Schedule 1, which is distinct from heavy-duty safety inspections under National Safety Code Standard 11B together with Ontario's Directive Schedule 2 procedures and modifications. In practice a heavy-duty diesel truck can need both a safety inspection and a separate emissions test. A heavy-duty diesel emissions inspection includes a pre-test check and opacity test; eligible 2007-and-newer vehicles with a GVWR of up to 6,350 kg also receive an OBD system test. Both must be completed by a registered DriveON technician at an authorized DriveON Vehicle Inspection Centre (VIC), which may include an authorized mobile facility.
An annual or semi-annual safety inspection can be used as a Safety Standards Certificate for 36 days after the inspection date. This 36-day period matters when using the inspection for an ownership transfer or another registration transaction requiring a Safety Standards Certificate.
Authorized mobile emissions inspections may be performed at an approved on-site location under the facility's DriveON authorization. Safety inspections have their own facility, technician, equipment and authorization requirements. Piotr Service focuses on mobile heavy-duty diesel emissions testing; do not assume the same visit automatically covers a full Schedule 2 safety inspection unless that service is separately authorized and scheduled. Ontario allows mobile inspections only when they are performed under the applicable VIC agreement and authorization.
